Coutances is found in the Manche department of Normandie, 65 kilometres south of Cherbourg.

Coutances itself is not a very thrilling town, in part because of the severe damage suffered during the Second World War.

It is a hill town dating back more than 1000 years, and has one big attraction - the Cathedral of Notre Dame.

Towering above both Coutances town and the surrounding countryside, the fine half-gothic half-Norman  style cathedral is best visited during the summer evenings when a sound and light show makes the most of this dramatic building.

There are also public botanical gardens to visit.
