Mende, Languedoc guide de voyage
Visitez Mende gites : hotels : location des voitures | Decouvrir Massif Central
Mende is in the Parc National de Cevennes, in the Lozère department (Massif Central) of Languedoc-Roussillon.
Mende is a town in the upper Lot Valley, at the northern edge of the Parc de Cevennes. Overlooked by the forested Mont Mimat, it is a town very worthy of a visit as you set off to the summit of Mont Lozère.
The 14th century Mende cathedral is interesting, if a little imbalanced to the eye - the belltower on the left is larger and more ornate than that on the right, and the central part in a different style again. The larger tower once contained the largest bell in the world.
There are other places of interest in the town, including the Penitents Tower and the 13th century Notre-Dame bridge (photo), but the highlight of a visit to Mende is the town itself, with its numerous fountains, public squares, river frontage and narrow streets lined with medieval buildings.
