Nevers, Bourgogne guide de voyage

Visitez Nevers: gites : Nevers hotels : location des voitures | Decouvrir south Bourgogne or Burgundy

Nevers is in the Nièvre department in the Bourgogne region, in central France at the confluence of the Loire and Nièvre Rivers.

The town of Nevers has its origins as a regional centre in Roman times, when it was an important depot for Julius Caesar. It is now a lively, active town renowned for its high quality porcelain.

Nevers old town, where medieval houses (most 15th-16th centuries, but in parts dating to the 12th century) line narrow streets, is found uphill from the bridge and river port on the Loire, and is a very enjoyable part of the town to explore.

Elsewhere in the town there are several interesting buildings to explore. Perhaps the highlight is the Ducal Palace, both for its turrets and design, and the views it presents over the Loire Valley. The central tower of the palace is particularly worthy of a close look for the many statues it presents. This 15th  century building is also now home to museum of ceramics.

The cathedral of Saint Cyr-Sainte-Julitte; the pilgrim chuch of St Etienne; and the triumphal arch at the northern edge of the town, are other highlights of Nevers.

To the north of the town you can visit the fascinating project to reconstruct a medieval castle at Guedelon.
