Parc Naturel Regional d'Armorique
Brittany

Armorique regional natural parc guide

The Regional Parc d'Armorique is found in western Bretagne, in the Finistere department of France.

The Parc extends as a long thin strip from inland Finistere out to the tip of the Crozon peninsula. Hence it has a wide variety of interest for the visitor, with attractive rolling countryside and rugged rocky coastline. The Aulne Estuary is very attractive, and the region also contains Brittany's highest mountains, the Monts d'Arree.

The Monts d'Arrée are really barely mountains at all, hardly reaching 1000 feet in height, but are rather rocky outposts in lovely gorse and heather sprinkled countryside, and a good place to walk and see the wildlife.

Theer are a multitude of small towns and villages set amongst the attractive countryside, containing a positive explosion of eco-museums where you can learn about traditional arts and crafts of the region, see windmills and 19th century school recreations, explore traditional buildings, and so on.

One unusual architectural feature found in this part of Bretagne is the so-called 'Parish Closes'. These are churches that are built with the cemetery around the church, surrounded by a stone wall to keep the animals out. These have been constructed in various elaborate fashions, with some particularly impressive gateways set in the walls. Although there are many of these that you will come across, particularly try to seek out the most well known at Thégonnec, Guimiliau and Lampaul-Guimiliau

Chateaulin, upstream from the Aulne estuary is a popular and pretty town to explore, with plenty of photo-opportunities provided by the canal front gardens and buildings. Further out on the Crozon Peninsula the port town of Camaret-sur-Mer is also worthy of a visit, with the Chateau de Vauban out at the end of the quay - and is well located for exploring the coastal scenery. The scenery is ever more dramatic as you move westwards, culmintaing with the view at Pointe de Pen-Hir at the most westerly point of the peninsula.

While still out on the peninsula, make the trip to Landévennec - along the coast road from Le Faou on the northern coast, where the remains of the 10th century abbey are surrounded by some very pretty countryside and has even more lovely views over the Aulne estuary.

And it perhaps the coastline scenery of the Couzon peninsula that is the highlight of this region - craggy and cliffy, with quiet beaches easily found between the dramatic rock formations that jut out into the sea. Camaret and Morgat are often used as bases by those exploring the region.

The area is a fine area for walkers, anglers and bird watchers.
