The 'capital' of the Dordogne department, Perigueux, is set towards the north of the region. Many miles from the Dordogne River, it is actually found on the Isle River.

The town contains an interesting centre - a mix of medieval and renaissance buildings combined. There are also attractive boulevards, and a region of streets lined with medieval houses that is a very pleasant place for a wander. Most 'action' in the town is focussed in the region around the cathedral.

The 'museum of Perigord' is in the town and houses some important prehistoric and roman artefacts.

Market days are Wednesday and Saturday in Perigueux

Note: Chateau de Hautefort is 40 kilometres east of Perigueux.
