Rochefort is on the Atlantic Coast, in the Charente-Maritime department of the Poitou-Charentes.

Rochefort has a military harbour dating back to the 17th century, when it was an important naval base.

The town itself was built up around the harbour, a carefully planned 'new town' of its time, and the straight lines of houses remain much as they were at that time, a bit too military for my liking but impressive nonetheless.

The arsenal, and the corderie which forms part of it, have now been renovated as a tourist attraction, and are the main reason you might visit the town - the building is now a listed Historic Monument. The gardens around the Corderie have also been restored.
