Saintes, Poitou-Charentes, guide de voyage

Visitez Saintes gites : Saintes hotels : location des voitures | Decouvrir Poitou-Charentes

Saintes is on the western coast of France, in the Charente-Maritime department, between La Rochelle and Bordeaux.

Saintes is a busy town dating from Roman times, certainly, and probably was a celtic town before that.

Roman ruins can still be seen in the town, the highlight being the Arena, an early amphitheatre to the west of the town in an attractive wooded spot. The Arch of Germanicus to the east of the Charente River, which passes through the town, is next to the Archaeological museum where you can see more of the towns Roman history.

Saintes also has an attractive 'old town'centre with some nice medieval houses in typical narrow streets, and there are also a couple of churches that are worth the effort - the Abbaye aux dames and the church of St Eutrope particularly.
