Sete, Languedoc-Roussillon, guide de voyage

Visitez Sete: gites : Sete hotels : location des voitures | Explore Languedoc

Sete is a large, cosmopolitan town between the Etang de Thau and the Mediterranean, referred to by the locals as the Venice of Languedoc. It is the largest fishing port of the French Mediterranean coast.

The town falls into two parts - the low town, with the port, and criss-crossed by canals and bridges; and the high town on Mont St Clair.

In the low town, the harbour front houses, canals and the fishing activity itself are the main attractions, along with the lovely 'village within a town' - the Pointe Courte sector.

A walk around Sete old town is a chance to get a feeling for the France 'as it should be' in a busy bustling town - the noises, smells and activity of a traditional town, narrow streets with washing hung to dry from balconies, locals disputing amicably on the street corners...

Continue further up the Mont St Clair to re-enter the peace of the countryside as you continue towards the pilgrimage spot at the chapel Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette at the summit (pilgrimage day is the 19th of each month), then on to the other side of the promontory at Pierres Blanches, to wander through the pine trees, getting fine views of the Etang below.
