Villereal is in the Lot-et-Garonne department of Aquitaine, 10km north of Monflanquin, 20km north of Villeneuve-sur-Lot and 12km south of Monpazier
Villereal was founded in 1269 by Alphonse de Poitiers as a French bastide town. The town was however occupied by the English during much of the Hundred Years War.
The most unusual and interesting feature of Villereal is its 14th century market hall, that dominates the central square. Markets are still held there on a Saturday morning, as they have been for the last 700 years. The nearby fortified church is also interesting to visit.
Villereal is a lively, attractive small town, with lots of back streets to explore - the area down from the church is perhaps the best for seeing medieval houses looming over narrow alleys.
The town is unusual in that it has 'real' shops rather than tourist shops, and is active all year around.
While in Villereal, pick up the leaflet "A guided walk through the bastide" from the tourist office. There are lots of things to see - the Leper House with its elaborate sculpted door, the old station, old stone sinks whose outflow pipes can still be seen sticking out from some buildings etc and the leaflet will add to your enjoyment.
Another useful leaflet is the 'tourist circuits' leaflet. This describes three car routes that pass the places of interest near to Villereal. Using these it is possible to find the local "Maisons à empilage" - houses made of wood in log cabin style, and some of the very oldest houses to be found in a region overflowing with medieval buildings.
Other attractive bastide towns nearby include Beamont and Monflanquin.
